Mathematics and Numeracy helps children understand numbers, shapes, measures, and data. They also learn how to use these skills in real-life situations. Children start with basics like arithmetic and mental maths — adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing — using practical resources. As they progress, they move on to more challenging problem-solving, reasoning, and explaining their thinking.
At Pen-y-Bryn Primary School, we teach maths mainly through the Big Maths Scheme, but we also use a range of other schemes and resources to enhance learning. We regularly complete CLIC and SAFE tests to monitor children’s progress, as well as weekly problem-solving challenges. Mathematics and Numeracy s is also taught through other parts of the curriculum. For example, in Year 2 we focus on measure as part of Science and Technology experiments, giving children real-life experiences where they can apply their maths skills.
